The reason of chaos in the power system is indicated by nonlinear dynamic systems theory with a simple power system;The critical conditions and parameters of the emergence of regional chaos is worked out by Melnikov function method,and designing of Variable Structure Control for UPFC.The simulation results shown that the emergence of chaotic oscillation of power system is closely related to the geometrical configuration of the power system non-linear model,as well as the power system operating parameters and structural parameters,under periodic perturbations,it has a significant effect to suppress chaotic oscillation by non-linear variable structure control.Farther analysis and research of this phenomenon and all-round grasp of the physical characteristics which will be done to find out the mechanism and solicitation condition of chaos,being propitious to control and prevent chaotic oscillation in power system.
