North-seeking technologies based on the fiber optic gyro are used more and more widely in national defense and civilian applications. It not only provides directional equipment for the strategic, tactical, or operational launchers, but also precise position of the baseline for geodetic surveying, oil drilling. Compared with traditional mechanical gyro, Fiber optic gyro has many advantages, such as fast start-up, wide dynamic range, low-cost, light weight, high sensitivity etc. It is very suitable for the research of low-cost, high-precision, small volume north-seeker.Precision of North-seeker mainly depends on the accuracy of gyro. But at the same conditions, modified north-seeking designs and selection of de-noising technologies could improve precision and speed of response greatly. This paper focused on design ways of North-seeker, and works were carried out as follows:The way of the north azimuth measurements was proposed and the errors that impacted the performance of Gyro North-finder was discussed whilst the working principle of FOG and north-finder system was introduced. Study the main factors that effect the precision and response of North-seeker to improve the precision of North-seeker based on FOG.According to the functional requirements of the North-Finder, the software of the system control, the data collection and the data processing was designed with Object Oriented programming method. Combining the excellent programming ability of VC with the strong computation ability and data processing ability of MATLB the north-seeker calculation was completed in the programming environment of VC.North finding experiments were carried out in different ways and results were comparative analyzed. Results show that north-seeking design can improve the precision and response of FOG north-seeker to a certain extent.
