Steel beam to CFST column joints with external stiffening ring is actually a typical connection configration in the building. The mechanical behavior and design approach of the joints are important for theoretical and practical research. In this paper, this type of joints mechanical behaviour and design approach were studied, specifically the following works:1,The paper research on the key issues on CFST columns to steel beam joints with external stiffening ring, a 3-D finite element model (FEM) was established by ABAQUS. The load versus deformation curves of this type joints were comparison between theoretical and experimental results, and they are match well with each other.2,Parameters study were performed based the FEM model, and those parameters were included, such as the width of external stiffening ring, the ultimate flexial strength of steel beam, the steel ratio of CFST column, the strength of steel tube and steel beam, the core concrete strength, the axial compression ratio and the beam to column linear stiffness ratio. The simplified practical design approachs for the ultimate flexural and initial bending stiffness of these joints were proposed based on parameter analysis. The simplified model was validated by FEM results.3,Some parameters were analyzed on the panel shear load-carring capacity of the type of joints based on the FEM model. A simplified design approachs for the ultimate shear capacity of the panel of these joints were proposed based on parameter analysis.
