Fast and accurate fault location plays an important role in the normal working of electric power system. After in-depth theoretical research on the line-to-ground fault location of the small current neutral grounding system, a new method about fault location called"the maximum of fault currents"is put forward in this paper which is based on wide-area synchronizing information. This method is based on the wave equation and constructs a fault location function according to the relations between fault current and fault distance, which requires synchronized samples of currents and voltages from two ends of a line, the fault distance current can be obtained using the iterative search algorithm on the whole line. The new method not only is propitious to line-to-ground fault location, but also can be generalized to the other fault types. Through a lot of computer simulations using the MATLAB and field experiment, the results show that the method is dependable and high precision. Furthermore, this paper introduces the hardware designation of the location device.
