Recently, with the great growth of the capital economy bridge construction has developed dramatically in our country. Meanwhile, more and more of long span bridges and large-scale structures have been built in mountainous region with the implement of Western Development Strategy. Wind characteristics of mountain district are very special and complex, and it becomes an emerging point of departure in the structure wind engineering. The Shanxi Yumenkou Yellow River highway bridge across from Yumenkou to Tongguan in the midstream of Yellow River, it is typical banked up river landforms and the lay of the rim land is very complex. The bridge belongs to large-span gentle suspension system; consequently, insuring it safe with the wind load has become critically important in structure design.This paper introduces wind characteristic problems and methods of the atmospheric boundary layer research field in bridge wind engineering firstly, and then introduces wind field measurement techniques of the atmospheric boundary layer, the main contents and methods about collected meteorological observed wind database and so on. By using the strong wind speed samples of Yellow River highway bridge, it focuses on strong wind profile and strong wind turbulence characteristics including turbulence intensity, gust factor, integral length scale of turbulence, power spectra of fluctuating speed and spatial coherence. From the analysis of these strong wind characteristics, we could find out the specific wind space distribution and regular pattern around the bridge. Lastly, on the basis of generally showing numeric simulation around the bridge, it analyzes with an emphasis on a contrast between numeric simulation and observed wind statistics furthermore. It is easy to verify the necessity of the research on resisting wind safety during bridge starting construction and later operation.Combining live wind observed with numeric simulation, this paper figures out the wind characteristics around the bridge as well as provides design basic wind speed, in the meantime, other similar articles may utilize it as reference materials. It would be provided with great theoretical significance and practical engineering value passes through the foregoing study.
