| The aim of this paper is to choose a more unified and suitable simple performance test methods for evaluating the Rutting Potential of asphalt mixtures at high temperature. Through comparing and analyzing the testing equipments, experimental conditions and influence factors of the existing test methods, the Indirect Tensile Test has been put forward. This paper describes research that suggests that the indirect tension (IDT) strength test, performed with SGC specimens and Marshall specimens, is potentially a simple test for evaluating the rut resistance of asphalt mixtures. Also, wheel rutting tests are selected for same specimens. Test results and analysis indicate that temperature, loading rate, gradation, bituminous cement and pitch dosage are the major factors affecting the IDT strength. After analyzing the data, favorable correlations are observed between IDT strength and laboratory tests of rut resist when using base asphalt mixture. These correlations suggest that the IDT strength could be the design indexes for evaluating the rut resistance of asphalt mixture. But when using SBS modified asphalt mixture, the correlations are not as good and need to do more research. In addition, the slope K value of gyratory compaction densification curve is analyzed in this paper. It could reflect not only compaction workability but also internal friction of asphalt mixture. Base on the research, the K value which reflect inherent information of asphalt mixture is recommended as the reference indicator for evaluating the rut resistance of asphalt mixture in asphalt mixture design phase. |
