The Research On The Nature Of Design Art In Architecture Of Ming And Qing Dynasties

The nature of design art is to achieve the perfect combination of two aspects, i.e. practicability and sense of beauty. In the architecture design, due to the fact that the practicability serves the core function and the sense of beauty in architectural forms attaches closely to the function, these two aspects are inseparable with each other. With the function being the premise, various features of architectural forms are generated on the basis of suiting the living environment, consequently, various styles and patterns come to the real life over the varied factors, including race, geography and a certain period in history. Having gone through a long-lasting evolution and development in history, from primitive society to slave society, and then to feudal society, in a way of gradual improvement and enrichment, ancient Chinese architecture eventually reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties; also, unique features in architecture style, which is distinguished from others, had been formed in ancient Chinese architecture.Besides reflecting the visible technology, architecture of Ming and Qing Dynasties, especially its features in architectural forms contained the inner expectation and aesthetic ideas of the people in that period. From the analysis of the features of architectural forms in Ming and Qing Dynasties, it has been explicitly found that the forms are reflected from the function and the presence of the function is to satisfy the need of humankind. Since the needs of humankind are showed in many different dimensions, both in physical and mental, it is possible, too, for the nature of design art in architecture to be presented in multiple dimensions. Therefore, with the help of certain basic theories in various subjects, including history, archaeology, architecture and the science of design art, I intend to observe the architectural features of Ming and Qing Dynasties under its crucial conditions both in physical and mental; in the meantime, a series of research methods, such as studying theories, collecting historical materials, reading reference literature and fact-finding investigation, have been introduced. To begin with the angle of analyzing the design art, I endeavor toanalyze and research the nature of design art------the combination of practicability,sense of beauty and symbolism, which are implied in the features of architectural forms in Ming and Qing Dynasties; moreover, for the purpose of better enriching the theory of design art and the creation of design, I intend to devise a new way and a new angle for the research on the nature of design art.Tracing back to the history and traditional culture during Ming and Qing Dynasties, the thesis studies the nature of design art in the architecture in that period. By avoiding the thinking way on a full westernization or a simple imitation of ancient style, targeting in the life and culture of modern people, I intend to pursue the traditional design thinking further, for the purpose of exploring the source of creativity in the new era. The research result promotes design culture with Chinese taste and a practical directing meaning to the contemporary design field.
