Although cement stabilized macadam base is widely used in high-class highway construction in arid -cold region of China, it has been found a shortcoming of easy to crack in practice. For the environmental characters of drought, big temperature deference from the morning to evening, and long term low-temperature in Qinghai Province is typical in China, this paper will aim at the environmental characteristic of Qinghai Province to complete the study with emphasis on material shrinkage characteristics, strength characteristics, and the design methods of composition to improve crack resistance of cement stabilized macadam base furtherly and to improve the overall pavement performance.Integrated experience, theoretical calculations, as well as the drying shrinkage and temperature test, the paper recommended a framework dense gradation range for the requirement of anti-crack in arid -cold region, and also a Determination Method with environmental considerations to fix cement content. On this basis, the paper analyzed the strength characteristics under low temperature, suggeuesting to make the freeze-thaw strength as the strength checking in cement stabilized macadam material design process. Also, the improvement principle analysis of admixture and qualitative analysis of the impact of the admixture content is analyzed in paper. Finally, the paper recommended a mixture composing design procedure of cement stabilized macadam base for low shrinkage and strength characteristics in low temperature. In a word, the paper gives out the meaningful theoretical base and operation contents for the further crack resistance improvement of cement stabilized macadam material in arid -cold region.
