| With the significant increase of traffic, the traffic flux as well as traffic loads are increasing. Especially after the application of trailer and container, more and more heavy vehicles are appearing. Nevertheless for a considerable amount of aged bridges, the damages, such as material aging, fissures, structure injuries etc, and the insufficiency of bridge width lead to traffic congestion, even block the traffic, which results in inestimable loss to national economy and much inconvenience to industrial production and daily life, even threatens the transport security. Therefore, the reinforcement and maintenance of aged bridges are in urgent need.This article introduced the first bridge strengthening and maintenance of the basic principles as well as the primary means of strengthening the principle of reinforcement methods, characteristics and application of reinforcement, in reference to the most commonly used method of reinforcement of the girder bridge test, the application of research results, based on continuous bridge strengthening program for theoretical analysis and comparison.
