Freak wave is a kind of huge wave which appears instantaneous and with strong destructive power. The height of freak wave is double than local significant wave height. It means that the freak wave is a strongly non-linear wave. In recent years, with rapid development of the exploitation and exploration of deepwater oil and gas resources, the freak wave should not be disregarded. The simulation of freak wave in laboratory should be researched for the increasing demand for the deepwater offshore engineering experimental.The aim of this study is to research the simulation of freak wave in offshore engineering basin, and make some suggestions for the simulation of various environments in model tests.A numerical model of the offshore basin is set up based on the analysis on new deepwater offshore basin in SJTU. The main parts which could affect waves, such as wave maker, wave absorber, current inlet and outlet etc. are simulated accurately in numerical model. With the User Defined Function files, we simulated the movement of wave maker and the effect of absorber.Consequently, the regular wave, irregular wave, instant wave are simulated in the numerical basin. With the analysis of them, the freak wave in irregular wave is simulated in the basin. In order to analyze the wave-current interactions in offshore basin, a flow field is simulated and analyzed in detail. It shows that the current in whole basin has some different from uniform current in theory. Then regular waves and freak waves are simulated with the effect of current. Results show that the simulation of the freak wave in flow field is satisfactory. But there still some different with the theoretical results. Mainly, the position of convergent point changes a little.Base on the numerical results, model test is carried out in real basin. The instant wave and freak wave are simulated successfully.The numerical and test results show that the freak wave can be simulated by the use of instant wave and irregular wave. The numerical offshore basin can be used in research of the simulation of the various environments.
