Although the automatic flow gauging has been adopted in some sluice gate of Yellow River Water Diversion Project, there are some obstacles to be solved first before the online real-time flow gauging puts into practice. As an untouching measure instrument which avoids the siltation of sands and mud as well as the influence of canal drifting objects, ultrasonic flowmeter is a suited equipment when it is utilized in water flow automatic sizing in open canal current, and it has been successfully used in ductwork flow measurement due to its steady working and high precision. In this paper, the online real-time flow gauging was for the first time utilized in domestic sluice gate of Yellow River Water Diversion Project. In fact, the influence of sediment concentration and coefficient of roughness could produce measurement error and result in problems in the management of Yellow River water resources. In order to solve these problems, the measurement principle as well as the software and hardware design of ultrasonic flowmeter was analyzed in detail first, and then the comparison research was carried on between different equipments and between different measurement methods in the sluice gate of Yellow River Water Diversion Project in Lijia'an. The roughness coefficient was measured, the relevant parameters adjusted, the measuring precision improved and eventually, the Yellow River water resources were made full use both in social and economic spheres. The main research achievements were as follows.1. The online real-time flow gauging was carried out with ultrasonic in Lijia'an sluice gate. The data obtained were all monitored and controlled by computer directly, and the water amount was measured accumulatively. The real-time monitoring system of sluice gate in Yellow River water diversion could control the operation situations of sluice gate, store data, turn on or turn off the strobe automatically.2. The precision of measurement achieved the relevant criterions. The comparison of water monitoring was carried out by sultrasonic flowmeter, cableway current meter, calculating with current curve and formula calculation. The precision error were all fell in±5% by calibrating the roughness coefficient and adjusting the relevant parameters.3. The related software was developed to put the current monitoring data into the telemonitoring system and transfer the data to the management center. Therefore the long-distance monitor of real-time current of test sluice gate was performed ultimately.4. The real-time data-base system was established and all data available could be copied and deposited. It was necessary for the security of historical data. All received data were analyzed and created the report forms daily, monthly and annually. Meanwhile, these historical data could be inquired, amended, recorded and printed if necessary.5. Based on the test in Lijia'an, the real-time current monitoring system should be spreaded in a large scale gradually in the sluice gate of Yellow River Water Diversion Project. Therefore, the water diversion of sluice gate could be performed by magcard and measured out.6. The current surveying precision could be influenced by the sediment concentration and the sediment situation in culverts. These need further research.7. The feasibility of the fit curve function utilized in other sluice gate to measure the current also need more validation.
