The cylinder block is the framework of a diesel engine. It supports all the components and accessories, also it suffers from very complicated force conditions. And its reliability has an important effect on the performances of a diesel engine. A detailed analysis, computation or exact evaluation on its structural strength and rigidity is essential in the process of design. It is helpful to improve and optimize the design, and then achieve a satisfactory design. The finite element method is the most reliable and efficient method for complex structural strength issue. The application of FEA enhance the reliability of diesel parts and shorten the design cycle in the engine project. The study of 4012 V-type diesel engine's cylinder block and cylinder liner was carried out using finite element method. First, the calculation was carried out on the free modal and constrained modal respectively. After analysis of the block's natural frequencies and corresponding vibration, the critical speed was got at different natural frequencies. Then the stress, deformation and fatigue of main bearing wall were checked in different load condition. And the area prone to fatigue damage was found. Once again after the thermal process simulation through BOOST, the average gas temperature, convection heat transfer coefficient and the average intake and exhaust temperature was got. Also the temperature and convection heat transfer coefficient of water jacket was got through STAR-CD. Then the calculation of temperature field was carried out, and the temperature distribution was got. At the mean time the coupling of CFD and FEA was carried out to make the result more actually. Finally based on the calculation of temperature field, the calculation of thermal stress was carried out on cylinder block and cylinder liner. The stress and fatigue was checked. And the deformation of liner was the focus of analysis.
