The objective of the planning of bus network is to make the bus network produce the maximum benefit by using modern theory of transportation planning and computer technology to optimize the network and transport capacity, based on the existing road network and transport capacity. It is an economical and effective measure which can make the resident travel more easily.Based on home and abroad research works, the combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis was chosen, also considering the bus network design theories and methods in other countries. A decomposition optimization approach was developed based on the modern operational research theory and calculating technique. The framework of the approach and the mixed integer mathematical model for selection of bus routes were presented and proved to be practical.First, introduce the network design research and idea of this paper. Second, predict the total passenger volume and the passenger volume between each area by the in-depth analysis of bus network. Third, analyze the goal and the influence factor of the planning of bus network. The mixed integer mathematical model for selection of bus routes were presented, considering the profit of transport corporate and travel time of resident, followed by its evaluation system. Finally, the planning of bus network in Dalian was taken as an example. Besides, the main features of the approach and the mathematical model were concluded, followed by some explanations about this paper.Empirical research shows that the proposed model is feasible and practicable. By using the approach and the mathematical model, the planning of bus network can be done efficiently, which provide some information to managers.
