With the development of power electronic technology and AC variable frequency speed regulation technology, marine electrical propulsion system has been attached to great importance by marine design and research institutions at home and abroad. This paper, with marine electric propulsion system being the object of study, makes an in-depth analysis and research on the structural features of the permanent magnet synchronous motor and torque characteristics of the propeller and the drive and protection features of the main components of the control system- the power devices(IGBT), and puts forward an auto-control method of current-sharing for the parallel operated IGBT at steady state, establishes the mathematical model of the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the propeller's torque as well as the simulation model of direct torque control of marine electric propulsion permanent magnet synchronous. It designs, based on the technology of the Programmable Logic Controller(PLC), an automatic control system of marine electric propulsion, which realizes the date exchange between the PLC and inverter via PROFIBUS DP interface and also writes programs for the control of the propulsion motor and the pods.Besides, by the use of the MATLAB/Simulink simulation software, it makes a simulation of the starting, acceleration and deceleration, sudden rising load and sudden decreasing load of the marine propulsion motor, and the simulation results show that this design of the marine electric propulsion automatic control system is feasible. This paper makes a tentative research of automatic control system of electrical propulsion ship which is the inheritance and development of the technique of marine electric propulsion. The author wishes that the paper will be helpful for the development and application of marine electric propulsion in China.
