1000kV UHV AC transmission system will become the main trend in power development in the future, while UHV substations are the hubs of the entire power system, once these load-center substations are damaged by lightning stroke, safe operation of electric network will not be insured and inevitably cause serious consequences, so it requires reliable lightning protection measures. As the probability of lines by lightning is higher than that of substations, and it is commonplace that over-voltage lightning wave invading into substations along lines, therefore, lightning over-voltage analysis on substations of UHV system becomes necessary.This paper takes a 1000kV UHV GIS substation for example and makes the most of internationally universal electromagnetic transient simulation software ATP-EMTP to research it. In the simulation, the paper synthesizes the substation and its incoming lines together, takes the line terminals into account, selects the near lightning strike as lightning strike point, and takes the influence of various factors into consideration, such as substation operation mode, power-frequency voltage, impulse grounding resistance etc. Over-voltage generated by lightning invasion wave in the electrical substation equipments (mainly transformers) is calculated and analyzed accurately so that we can identify the over-voltage distribution and variation through it, and the corresponding lightning over-voltage protection measures are proposed, simultaneously, it can provide a valuable reference to the electrical equipment protection. And it has some value to run calculations with similar problems as well. Because it is difficult to consider the effect of impulse corona on transmission lines in ATP-EMTP, this paper does not consider the impact of transmission line corona effects for the sake of reliability. Therefore, the calculated result is safer.
