Improper seepage control is the mean reason for the dam seepage and infiltration, so seepage analysis and calculation for the safe operation of hydraulic structures is of great significance. In the general study, seepage surface are identified using successive approximation approach by solving the Laplace equation of infiltration head. A method of seepage calculation based on the porous media model and VOF free surface capturing technology is developed in this paper. The main work and results are as follows:(1) On the basis of reviewing the current seepage research, a method of seepage calculation based on the porous media model and VOF capture phreatic surface as well as the discrete mathematical model using the control volume method is developed. The homogeneous earth dam and underground river channel are token as an example to verify the results, which show that the calculation results of phreatic and infiltration of surface match with the theoretical solution well. It shows that the seepage calculation using the porous media model and VOF free surface capturing technology has high accuracy and efficiency.(2) Apply the porous media model and simulating technology of VOF phreatic surface to calculate the seepage field, including rectangular dam with drainage corridor and concrete gravity dam with drainage systems, and the results are identical with the Reference simulation. It shows that the complicated seepage model calculations, such as including drainage holes. are feasible in application with method.(3) Apply the method to the optimal design of Western Xia reservoir radial wells. According to the principles of designing radial well, this paper combines with the actual characteristics of the Western Xia reservoir and proposes radial wells design, taking into account Yinbei Irrigation design of radial well. Compare and analyze the elements of seepage field in every program, such as seepage discharge, phreatic surface, infiltration slop. then choose the right design of effectively controlling the seepage.
