To solve the problem of model reduction in power systems, this paper studies balanced realization theory. At first, the paper shows the balanced realization theory and the process of model reduction to linear system and nonlinear system. Then the paper researches the process of balanced model reduction theory in power systems in single machine infinite linear model, followed by simulation curves of each reduced model when they are in the situations of constant control and optimal control. The next part is the process of balanced model reduction in single machine infinite nonlinear model and simulation curves based on simulation analysis. At last, summarize the balanced realization model reduction methods in power system. The results of simulation and error calculation show that when Hankel singular values are satisfied with the conditionk k1σσ+, the approximation properties of the balance model reduction are excellent, and error is small; For reducing system that the order is less than k , although the error is comparatively large, the stability is preserved in the reduction systems. The last feature is very significative to study the high layer model reduction in the hierarchical control for a large scale power system.
