Nature has always been the source of scientific and technological progress of mankind since ancient time. It can be said that imitation of nature is reflected in the entire history of human civilization. The progress of human civilization is a process of humankind deepens their understanding of social and natural laws, while one of the most effective ways is imitation of surroundings, including the imitation of biological morphology and behavior. Throughout the history of Eastern and Western architecture, we can also find the tradition of inheriting and mimicking the biological patterns. With the development of theory of complexity and digital technology, architectural bionics comes into a new dimension. This thesis focuses in the history of architectural bionics and its application in the area of digital design. Firstly, from a historical perspective, the article divided the history of architectural bionics into primitive civilization period, agricultural civilization period and industrial civilization period, and then illustrated that the development of architectural bionics is a progress from direct copy to imitation of principles, and also pointed out the understanding of biological principles in these periods stayed in the stage of simplicity.Secondly, the research demonstrated the new scientific, cultural and technological background of architectural bionics. The study explained impact of the development of science of complexity and biological science to architectural bionics, illustrated the change of architectural theory leaded to the transformation of design concept and the pursuit of new architectural forms resulted from the development of building structure, and then point out the digital technology made more and more bionic architecture come from imagination to reality and also change the process of architectural design. Finally, the thesis summarized the development of digital architectural design bases on bionics into three different orientations, which were separately explained with examples. While in the third orientation of " bionics in design process", the article highlights a series of theories and techniques which were widely used by pioneer architects, and illustrated the characteristics of these theories and techniques through examples.
