With the good temperature characteristics and short decay time, barium fluoride (BaF2) scintillator is selected by CIAE (Chinese Institute of Atomic Energy) as a detector of the fast time resolution to measureαparticle. This thesis describes the detailed course of designing and assembling a BaF? detector, including the choice of the crystal material, the packing process of reflectors, the choice of the light pipe material and the test of transmission, and a series of performance test under different temperatures. The performance tests include energy resolution and time resolution of BaF2 detector under different temperatures and the performance of particle discrimination. Finally,αpulses under different temperatures are picked up, and the relationship between time resolution and light components is verified. The result shows that temperature largerly affect the energy resolution, the time resolution and the performance of the pulse-shape discrimination. At the room temperature, the time resolution of the BaF2 detector has been reached the ps magnitude.
