Two-stage Matrix Converter(TSMC) possesses the same performance as the Conventional Matrix Converter(CMC) in many areas, such as intrinsic bi-directional energy flow, high quality input/output waveforms, adjustable input power factor, high power density and small harmonic pollution. Moreover, its commutations are also much easier and safer and it needs a simpler clamp circuit than that of the CMC. So the TSMC is a novel power converter with huge development potentials.This paper lucubrated the TSMC's linear modulation strategies, and extended the current and voltage space vector overmodulation strategies to its rectifier and inverter. When TSMC's rectifier and inverter are working in overmodulation state, without adding any hardware condition, the voltage transfer ratio can improve from 0.866 to 1.053.The TSMC's simulation model was built based on the above analysis. The experimental prototype of the DSP and CPLD-based control system was constructed. This paper investigated several important components of the prototype, such as input filter, clamp circuit and driver circuit of bidirectional switchs. The system software was designed and its hardware and software was debugged. Finally, this paper completed the simulation and experimental of TSMC working under linear modulation strategy and overmodulation strategy.Simulation and experimental results show that TSMC has perfect input and output characteristics, and its energy can flow in bi-directional directions. The overmodulation strategy can effectively improve the TSMC voltage transfer ratio, and the output voltage fundamental amplitude can precise linear control. The overmodulation strategy of the inverter can effectively control the output characteristics of the TSMC under abnormal input conditions, so this overmodulation strategy is very suitable for TSMC and other applications that are sensitive to the input voltage fluctuation.
