Today, as the number of kinds of vehicles, ships and aircrafts becomes bigger and bigger, and the speed becomes faster and faster, the collision accidents are increasing every year, causing serious loss of life and property. Energy-absorbing device can absorb most of kinetic energy, reduce casualties and the property losses to the maximum. Therefore, it is significant that advanced research on the energy-absorbing device is to reduce casualties and economic losses.In this paper, the vehicle is regarded as the research object, a new-style railway vehicle passive safety device, energy-absorbing device in metal-cutting way is put forward in the cross research field between metal-cutting and railway vehicle energy absorption. The device utilizes the theory of energy absorption in the metal-cutting process. With explicit finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA, the three-dimensional simulation for the energy-absorbing process of energy-absorbing device 'in metal-cutting way is carried out. The curve of energy and force is obtained. The trend of energy curve of the two energy-absorbing component is consistent. Compared with crushing energy-absorbing component, energy-absorbing process in metal-cutting way can absorb more collision energy in shorter time, and energy-absorbing capacity is stronger; energy-absorbing device in metal-cutting way is more effective to reduce the peak value of impact force, and the time of the peak value is delayed.The effect of factors, including cutting depth, cutting initial velocity, tool degree, tool width, tool material, work piece material, on cutting metal-cutting energy-absorbing process is researched in the paper. The effect of each parameter on energy-absorbing capability is analyzed in detail, the effect rule of every factor is obtained. Adopting the method of orthogonal regression design, a prediction model of cutting force and energy is built, and the significance test is finished.'The effect of cutting depth, cutting initial velocity, tool degree, tool width on metal-cutting energy-absorbing process is analysed. The research results play the guiding'role of advanced research and engineering design of metal-cutting energy- absorbing device.
