At present, energy consumption indexs are usually used to evaluate building performance, especially in public buildings. In China, energy consumption of rural residential buildings in the hot summer and cold winter zone are really few, in particular the part of which to improve the indoor environment. Using energy consumption index to evaluate the building performance is not appropriate. Therefore, this paper attempts to explore the evaluation index of building performance in the perspective of building thermal environment.Existing thermal environment evaluation index based on the human body's thermal comfort, which can only assess the single or a few time point of indoor thermal environment, is difficult to evaluate the impact of architectural design on the long-term thermal environment effects. But this is particularly important for the residence building performance. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a long-term evaluation index of residential thermal environment based on thermal comfort, to evaluate the residential architectural design. In this paper, field tests and questionnaires are carried out in rural residential in the North of Hunan Province in the summer of 2008, to get the local indoor thermal environment and thermal comfort conditions. According to the survey results, we obtain the linear fit between the mean thermal sensation vote of the local residents and the indoor operating temperature. The region's summer neutral temperature is 26.7℃, and the range of accepted thermal comfort temperature is from 21.8℃to 31.6℃. On this basis and refer to BIN method, which is one of the simple methods to calculate building energy consumption, using the linear relationship between the mean thermal sensation vote and indoor operating temperature and the frequency distribution of building annual indoor average hourly operating temperature, we proposed and calculated a new evaluation index of building thermal environment: Thermal Discomfort Rate.To further study the use of passive building design methods to improve the indoor thermal environment, this paper establish a basis architecture model using DesignBuilder software, whose Thermal Discomfort Rate in winter, summer and the all-year are calculated respectively. Based on this model, five factors of passive building design method:thermal insulation on exterior wall, ratio of window to wall, window glass materials, shading, and roof forms are selected to analysis of their impact on the Thermal Discomfort Rate. Finally, using the orthogonal experimental design method, this paper obtained the impact level of the five factors on the Thermal Discomfort Rate and the optimal combination scheme.Consequently, we get the optimize design method for rural residence in North Hunan to create better long-term thermal environment.
