Electric arc furnace is a kind of furnaces, which uses the energy of arc to smelt metal. It can obtain high temperature that other furnace can't obtain. Some high-alloy steel must be smelted in electric arc furnace, so the establishment and the research of electric arc model contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of electric arc furnace system, providing an important basis for the design of electrode regulator and harmonic analysis. Furthermore it also has an important guiding significance for actual production.The composition of electric arc furnace power supply system and the circuit mode of its main components have been instructed in this paper, on the basis of which the mathematical model of the power supply system is established. Then the physical characteristic of the arc is introduced, the impedance characteristic of the arc is analyzed. Based on the energy conservation law and related arc physical knowledge, the time-domain model of the arc is established, in the model the arc instantaneous current and arc length can be used as input and the arc conductance can be selected as state variable, the scope of the arc model parameters is determined, and the arc model is incorporated into the power supply system which verifies the validity of the arc model.Genetic algorithm is chose in the paper to get the exact value of arc model parameters. The principle and method of genetic algorithm is described. As the standard genetic algorithm is easy to fall into premature and converge slowly, some improvements are made on standard genetic algorithm. The results of parameters identification on the base of improved genetic algorithm coincide with the actual arc characteristics. The accuracy of parameters identification as well as the validity of the model arc is proved.
