Earthquake causes huge building damage and large casualties in the world. The majorseismic hazards of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures in Wenchuan include the crackand collapse of filler wall, the strong beam with weak column, the tensile failure or shearfailure of cast-in-situ place stairs and structure collapse. A 2D numerical model for collapseanalysis of RC frame structures based on proved DEM is developed by discretizating astructure into beam elements, column elements and joint elements, constructing springs on theinterfaces, including axial spring, transverse spring and bending spring which have anonlinear behavior between force and displacement calculated by section builder software. The synchrony dynamic relaxation method is proved and used to calculate the model. Using aspecific collision detection method for rectangle called crossing method, the computingefficiency and speed can be more significantly. The calculation for colliding problems iscompleted by introducing reduction coefficient.Based on the method and model, a program is developed to simulate responses of RCframe structures on the Visual C++ develop platform. The springs and colliding points arerestored by chained lists which is convenient to delete destructive springs and change thepoints according to the calculation. The results of the animation in OpenGL show that theprogram can commendably simulate the whole process from intact state to collapse whichgive references for design of earthquake-resistance and checking computations.
