Due to the rapid development of economy, environment and technology, it is required to make use of the advanced skills to improve the production process, plant layout and tools'capacity.To enable manufacturing enterprises to adapt to rapidly changing market environment, reconfigurable manufacturing model emerged. When the market changed to some extent, Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) can use reconfiguration to change configuration to correspond, which reduce the time of programming, designing and building of manufacturing system which suit the change of the varieties and outputs and the time of new products. It can reduce investment of system constructing, lower production costs, ensure the quality, use resources rationally, and improve enterprise's market competitiveness and profitabilityReconfigurable manufacturing system is known as the impact of future industry first in the top ten key technologies and the layout has been the main content and one of the key technologies reconfigurable manufacturing systems. Layout itself is a classic combinatorial optimization problem and has complete nature of NP, which allows the layout of RMS become a very difficult problem of modern manufacturing enterprises.Subsequently, the limitation of SLP, QAP and multi-objective model are analyzed first, and then Quadratic Facility Layout Method (QFLM) is proposed to layout the RMS by combining the characteristics of RMS and the type of facility layout. In addition, the thinking, superiority and method process of QFLM is stated. And the facility models are divided into independent models and dependent models, according to certain principles and classification. For independent models, Mixed Array layout method is used to layout, combining with QAP and ant colony algorithm (ACA). For dependent models, Centroid method is used to solve its function, and they are located around the independent models. When the independent models and dependent models are layout successfully, the whole layout of RMS is accomplished.At last, the QFLM method is put into practice to improve the layout of winding workshop of a company. On the one hand, the production process of winding workshop is optimized based on the QFLM. On the other hand, the facility models of winding workshop are divided into independent models and dependent models to study, according to the certain principles and classification. And the winding workshop is layout successfully though solving the function. Thus the QFLM is validated availably and effectively.
