Reservoir optimal scheduling is a class of complex combinatorial optimization problems with multi-objective, non-linear, strong constraints and so on. Two critical problems confronted in reservoir optimal scheduling are to establish an appropriate mathematical model to represent the actual reservoir optimal scheduling problem and to build such a mathematical model for solving the appropriate optimization algorithm. The particle swarm optimization algorithm which developed from 1995 has become more active branch in optimization algorithms. It is mainly used in multi-function optimization problems, including constrained optimization problem, it can be used to solve the hydroelectric reservoir optimal scheduling problem. Paper first describes the origins and the current situation of the reservoir optimal scheduling and the particle swarm optimization algorithm, then uses the particle swarm optimization algorithm to analyze the reservoir optimal scheduling. For the features of standard particle swarm optimization algorithm, paper introducts animal prey search strategy and proposes a new particle swarm optimization algorithm based on prey search strategy. Respectively, using standard particle swarm optimization algorithm, based on predatory search strategy for particle swarm optimization and accelerating genetic algorithms, paper establishs the mathematical model of reservoir optimal scheduling, and conductes applied research in Hualiangting hydropower station. It is indicated that particle swarm optimization algorithm is efficient in soving reservoir optimal scheduling.
