Since 2000,with the rapid and sustained development of Chinese economy, Chinese architect have been put forward higher requirements on the aspects of function features, construction techniques, design concepts, creative ways, etc. Japan, our neighbor in the eastern Asia, deeply influenced by the Chinese traditional culture, not only has advanced economy and technology, but also is a world leader in the achievements of modern architecture. It created a large number of high-level architect and a great deal of architectural masterpieces, the Japanese modern architecture is to be recognized especially as the respect for nature, traditional culture and the successful performance in the creative spirit for the world. Therefore, in-depth study of the Japanese architect's design concept and the design method will be possible to provide a valuable reference and a vivid example for Chinese modern architecture.Through describing the development course of both Chinese and Japanese architectural culture, the paper uses case study and interview as the main research method to compare, analyze, and summarize, focused on the values of the respective buildings, architectural design concept between Chinese and Japanese actual architectural design cases. The author analyzed their differences in creative design concepts and methods, processes, results and, and from the geographical environment, cultural background, educational background, etc. to explore the underlying causes of their differences.Through the research we found that there are significant differences between Chinese and Japanese architectural design in key part of the design process, such as core goals and entry point of the design:(1) Great contrast in the field of visual symbols (form) and the cultural representation for the design goals and the final result. (2) Apparent difference in understanding the relationship between architecture and environment. Compared with Japanese, Chinese architectural design is clear lack of deep concern and attention to properly handle the relationship between architecture and environment.(3) There is difference exits in the degree of understanding and the attention for people-oriented, humanistic concern. Japanese architectural design reflects more attention in detail and more humanistic care.(4) There is difference exits in the formation mode of design creative. During the design process, Japanese architectural design work reflects more objective logic of the natural generation, but Chinese design work embody more subjective arbitrary orientation.By in-depth study of Japanese architectural design concepts and design methods, it is possible to provide a valuable reference for our Chinese modern architecture creations.
