In the study of the relationship between people and land, the technology implemented by community people has an important position, and the in-depth study and understanding of it has great significance in the interpretation of the human response to environment. After a visit, I selected a typical loess hilly region located in the County of Gansu Province Zhuanglanghe as the study area and chose the 50-year terraced building in this area as a research subject. The paper analyzed the social and economic reasons, policies and systems drivers caused by the terrace construction, and the terrace construction technology as well as the environmental benefits to observe the interactive content between people and land in this region, particularly the role of the environment played.This paper is divided into three parts:The first part is an introduction. This part describes the origin of the study, relevant research review as well as this topic’s academic and practical significance, which to propose the scale of in-depth study and specific technical path.The second part is divided into four chapters, which is the subject of this paper. The main reason of Zhuanglanghe terrace construction, policy-driven, technological content and environmental benefits are the most important study content of this paper. The first chapter mainly analyzed the pressure caused by local natural conditions and socio-economic conditions for Zhuanglanghe County to survive and the conflict between people and environment. Since the 1950s, with the launching of the country’s soil and water conservation, terraces as water conservation technology was introduced into Zhuanglanghe, and then rapidly popularized by local cadres and the masses. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of driving force from terrace policy implemented by Zhuanglanghe County, from which you can see, the important reason of Zhuanglanghe terraced building prospering for fifty years is that the government played the positive role. The third chapter researched the historical process of terraces technological development. The fourth chapter stated the local environment effects which the terraces produced. After half a century of terrace construction, high level specifications have been widely distributed in Zhuanglanghe land, and the original hilly area has changed a lot, which brought obvious social and environmental benefits.The third part is the conclusion. This paper argues that, the adoption and use of terraced building technology created the conditions to develop local agricultural production. And this is also inevitable result for the cadres and the masses to deepen their understanding of the local environment condition. In a word, terraced construction technology brought the local topography important changes and resulted in a positive environmental benefits.
