The growth characteristics and turf performance of Bluechip bluegrass(Poa pratensis) treated with 4 kinds of plant retardent, Paclobutrazol(PP333), Uniconazole(S-3307), Chemical Controller No.11 and No.12, with 5 levels of concentration individually were observed from May, I4~?to June, 28~ of 2000, and the apparent quality of turf were evaluated comprehensively. The effect of the retardents and their concentration on the physiological characteristics of Crest bluegrass and Alpine bluegrass was studied in the pot in the lab. The results show: 1. All of the retardents inhibited the growth of Bluechip bluegrass more or less, and deepened the leaf color of the turf The effect of inhibition was poor at low level of concentration, and the new tissues of central leaves were killed, the leaf tops lost green color and got premature senility, the whole plant grew very weakly, even died at the high level of concentration. The growth peak of Bluechip bluegrass was retarded and the life span of the grass was prolonged at the low-medium level of concentration. 2. In view of comprehensive evaluation, the apparent quality of Bluechip bluegrass turf was quite good after treated with 50.OmgIm2(A2), 100 mg/rn2 (A3)ofPP333 and 20.Omg/m2(B3), 40.0 mg/rn2 (B4) of 5-3307. 3. PP333 and 5-3307 effectively increased the heat-resistance, drought- resistance and cold-resistance of Crest and Alpine bluegrass, but not with the same step, tendency and degree. These two kinds of retardents with different concentration significantly improved the tillering of the plant, and the A3 was the best among them. They also enhanced the activities of SOD, R/T(root/tiller) of bluegrass, promoted the root growth at low level of concentration, and thickened the root, led to the occurrence of secondary roots, increased the root biomass at the high level of concentration.
