The purpose of this study is to optimize windbreak system in western arid and semi-arid sand-land area of Heilongjiang Province and to solve the current problems in windbreak establishment in this area. Two hundred square kilometers model area was designated for this study in Yinhe Town, Gannan County, Heilongjiang Province by considering general situation of physical geography and windbreak system as well as the natural resources in Yinhe Town. Studies on comprehensive evaluation of windbreak system, regeneration and replacement of inferior poplar forest, vertically stratified growing of trees, herbs and medicine plants, exploitation of environmental resources under plantation, and the regulation of industrial structure were conducted in the model area based on theory of eco-economy and the principles of giving consideration to both of ecological and economic effects. Through optimizing the industrial structure, tree species composition, windbreak patterns, management methods, and matter circulation and energy flow, a eco-economic-typed model area of windbreak system, characterized by model patterns of 搉arrow belt and small network? plantation management, vertically stratified growing of trees, herbs and medicine plants and mushroom cultivation under plantation, was established. Systematic technical scheme for regenerating and replacing windbreaks in western arid and semi-arid sand-land area of Heilongjiang Province was proposed combining considered the local practical situation.
