The Effect of nickel on growth of swamp cabbage and its physiological function was investigated by liquid culture and soil pot culture . The results indicated as follows:1. The proceeding of germination of seeds was accelerated by soaking the seeds with nickel nutrient solution.2. The liquid culture and soil pot culture showed that the adequate concentration of nickel could enhanced' the growth of swamp cabbage , while exceeding nickel was toxic to swamp cabbage when nitrogen was supplied with urea or NP^NOs.3. Excessive nickel in nutrient solution inhibited the urease activity while adequate concentration of nickel could elevate the urease activity mainly because the production of urease increased.4. With the increase in the Ni-concentration treated, the content of soluble sugar in the leaves increased; the content of chlorophyll firstly increased and then decreased; the contents of amino acid firstly increased and then maintain the same level.5. After the leaves was sprayed only once by nickel solution(5 mg Ni/L), the activity of SOD and POD was enhanced while the content of MDA and soluble sugar decreased.6. Nickel make no marked influence over the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg in the shoot of plant, whereas the addition of Ca, Mg to the soil can lower nickel's validity and alleviate the its toxicity to the plant.7. Most of nickel added to soil was quickly fixed in 48 hours, and then the proceeding of fixation slowed down.
