When laticifers of Hevea brasiliensis bark are wounded by latex exploitation, latex from the laticifers exudes out for some time before the flow stops. We call the changes near the laticifer wound leading to the stopping of latex flow as temporary plugging of laticifers. In the bark wound prevented from latex exploitation for a long time, wound periderm around the bark wound develops, when changes taken place in the laticifer wounds are called permanent plugging of laticifer wounds.Using light microcopy, it was found a protein network formed at the extremities of laticifers during latex flow in exploited trees. The protein network might play a vital role in obstructing and stopping of latex flow.Changes in the activities of endochitinase and P -1,3-glucanase in exuded latex and wounded bark during latex flow were studied Results showed both enzymes accumulated in the laticifer wounds during latex flow. This gave evidence that the protein network with the enzymes in laticifer wounds might be a biochemical defense that could prevent pathogens infecting.Six days after wounding by a latex exploitation , while wound periderm gradually developed ,the activities of endochitinase and P-1,3-glucanase disappeared. The results on the mechanisms of laticifer wound plugging after wounding are significant to improvement of latex exploitation and control of laticifer diseases.
