The three critical reserves, Yihuang Reserve in Jiangxi Province, Hupingshan National Reserve and Wuyunjie Reserve in Taoyuan, in Hunan Province were surveyed within 2000-2001, and the results combined with chorography checking-up are analyzed, to finally form this thesis. In practical studies, methodology used for in- and outdoor work is, (1) transect line, (2) trail survey, (3) infrared trail-master monitor, (4) visiting locals, etc. The main conclusions are as follows.1. The present situations of human activities, forest resources, and South China Tiger's prey are collected in detail as to evaluate the fitness of habitats where the tiger probably occurs, and furthermore, the differences among these reserves surveyed are compared in ecological factors, and are explained. The conclusions are that scarce ungulate number, strong human activities, and fragmental habitats, as a whole, result in survival conditions deteriorative generally in these surveyed reserves.2. According to collections in historical data and surviving requirement of South China Tiger, the main causes of d shrunk distribution were analyzed, that show that productive manner and transformation in historical periods with human civilization development brought about deforestation and decrease of forests distribution, and South China Tiger's ranges were shrunk from plain to mountainous lands, and from low mountains to mid-belts as to be only occurrence on f the ridge of big mountain. All of these analyses clarify the unilateral understanding of people.3. Field survey results, with references of researches in territory area, prey density and killed livestock of Sumatra Tiger, Bengal Tiger those have similar living conditions with South China Tiger, all of these were integrated into fundaments to analyses reasons of scarce and threats of the tiger.Based on the surveys, comparisons and analyses mentioned above, the improvements of conservation and management measure in terms of the reserves situation where tiger might exist, as well as preliminary assumption to save the subspecies are put forward; in addition, basic opinions of the population increase concerning the tiger i5n captivity were advanced by which to achieve the final success of the tiger naturalization.
