The aim of the present study was to select Cd accumulating oilseed rape varieties for phytoremediation of Cd contaminated soil and to investigate the uptake and accumulation mechanism for the selected oilseed rapes, then improved oilseed rapes remediating ability.Hydroponic culture experiment showed that three cultivars of oilseed rapes had higher Cd uptake among 22 oilseed rape varieties studied. Greenhouse pot trails using artificial Cd contaminated loamy soil indicated that the variety ChuanyouII-10 was a potential cultivar for phytoremediation of Cd contaminated soil.Pot trails using artificial Cd contaminated loamy soil showed that both Indian mustard and Chuanyou II-10 increased Cd uptake with an increase in growth period. There was a consistent reduced uptake of Cd from older to younger leaves for both Chuanyou II-10 and Indian mustard. The experiment showed Indian mustard and oilseed rapes could activate and absorb the insoluble Cd in the addition CdCO3 calcareous soil, Indian mustard and variety Zhongshuang-4 cocroped could increase their Cd uptake amount. When EDTA was added to Cd contaminated soil in the later growth period, Cd uptake of Indian mustard and Chuanyou II-10 could markedly increase while the addition of citric acid showed an opposite trend. Similarly, the addition of nitrogenous fertilizer could increase the shoot and root uptake of Cd for both Indian mustard and Chuanyou II-10 with the following descending trend of uptake capability : (NH4)2SO4> NH4NO3> Ca(NO3)2.On the whole, selection, accumulation characteristics and regulation measure of oilseed rapes and their potential for phytoremediation of cadmium contaminated soil were investigated.
