It is studied and discussed comprehensively in this paper that the physiological structure of mangrove plants and the functions of mangrove in ecological system and environment. The results show that the high productivity, the high return rate and the high decomposition rate are the characteristics of the mangrove ecosystem. The acting mechanism is also analysed and the theoretical value is obtained that the wave height attenuation is about 80% when the height of mangrove is from 2.5 to 4 m and the width of it is 100 m, and the obstructing coefficient is 0.4. Based on the data of the sedimentation rate on mangrove tidal flats in different areas in China and the rising rate of the sea level along the coasts of China, the paper reveals that mangrove can offset the harmful influence of the sea level rise in the 21th century. The mangrove plants can clean the sea water and air by absorbing and trapping the materials.
