In this study, a total of 88 typical buckwheat cultivars including 58 common buckwheat and 30 tartary buckwheat from Shanxi province were screened to estimate genetic diversity by RAPD and phenotypic level. Jaccard's genetic similarity coefficients and minimum distances calculated by 6 main quantitative characters were used to construct dendrograms by the unweighted pair-group method of arithmetic average (UPGMA). The experimental results were summarized as follows:1. The result of morphology showed that there were clear variation among buckwheat cultivars.Through systematical classification method, common buckwheat and tartary buckwheat have been classified into several groups respectively.2. RAPD analysis revealed that genetic similarity coefficients within the common buckwheat were among 0.633 ~ 1.000, and 0.797 ~ 0.982 among tartary buckwheat. However, there existed a high degree of homogenety between most of them and showed a lower differentiation among cultivars.3. When all polymorphic RAPD bands were used for cluster analysis , 90 percent of common buckwheat were classified into one RAPD group and only several cultivars were classified into single group.4. By analysis among cultivars, it was suggested that buckwheat cultivars of shanxi show moderate level of polymorphism and relatively close relationships.
