Agroforestry is a sustainable land-management system which increases the overall yield of the land, combines the production of crops (including tree crops) and forest plants and/or animals simultaneously or sequentially, on the same unit of land, and applies management practices that are compatible with the cultural practices of the local populationAiming at the character of natural resources in hills land of red soil, the author have create an Agroforestry Database System by investigating and collecting the agroforestry planting manner. By using the database, the author has selected several agroforestry modes for the hills land of red soil. This entire job can provide scientific evidences to develop the high-efficient and durative agriculture.With the systematic point of view, the author design and apply a frame for agroforestry decision-making in this research. The main achievements of this research are shown as follows:1. Establishment of the Agroforestry Database System in the hills land of red soil.The author has created an Agroforestry Database System by investigating and collecting the agroforestry-planting manner. The database includes 7 depicted factors such as "Structure, Name of the plant, Forms of the mode, Production of the output, Land Condition, Function and Benefit, Problem". The Agroforestry Database System was created under the software condition of FoxPro 6.0. The system has several goodcharacters such as power function, easy to manipulate, and good interface for man and computer to communicate. In all these good characters, the most advantage of this database is that it can be renew its data at anytime when needed.2. Establishment of the indicators system of agroforestry evaluation in hills land of red soil.Based on information of the agroforestry knowledge and combined with local fact of hills land, 22 indicators of agroforestry are choosed as the preelection indicators, including the yield, pure ratio of new income, ratio of input and output, date of refund etc. The Delphi method and the princomponent analysis method are adopted to select indicators that can be adjusted to this area. The research results show that 20 of the 22 indicators are effective. Among the 20 indicators, yield, pure ratio of new income, ratio of input and output, date of refund, weights are 0.078 > 0.075 ^ 0.06 and 0.053 respectively.3. Series of agroforestry modes were selected to fit for the region of Xianning. Xianning was located in typical hills land of red soil. By investigated the presentplanting mode of Xianning, Series agoforestry modes were selected through the Agroforestry Database System. By comparing their efficiencies, we can draw a conclusion that agroforestry modes show great advantages to the control.
