The water conservation function of the main forest sorts of northern mountainous region in Heilongjiang Province was studied by adopting the combination technique of field investigation and orientating observation. By analyzing the transpiration rules, tree transpiration estimation, soil filtering and litter filtering character, the results indicated that the transpiration intension of korean pine is 0.4300g/g h-1 on individual level in all the tree species. Hazel was the least(0.2799g/g h-1). The forest transpiration amount in August of korean pine plantation was the largest on average area, and hazel shrubbery is the least. The soil stable infiltrating rate of different forest sorts changed from large to small is Mongolian oak forest, Birch forest, Manchurian Ash forest, Scotspine plantation and Larch plantation. The soil non-capillary porosity of Manchurian Ash forest on woodland was the largest, and the next is Mongolian oak forest, Larch plantation, Birch forest and Scots pine plantation. The changing range of holding-water rate of litter was 311.49%~682.60%, and the order from large to small was Manchurian Ash forest, Mongolian oak forest, Larch plantation,Larch plantation and Scotspine plantatio. Combining above dates and results, the water self-restrainting function of broadleaf forest especially of the shrubbery is more powerful than plantation.
