In this study , genetic diversity were studied at morphological and RAPD levels in populations of Phyllostachys edulis .The main results are as follows: 1.Such basic statistical analysis as the mean, variance , standard deviation , CV (coefficient of variation) to the morphological characters of 20 populations of Ph.edulis indicated that great diversity existed among populations, with ranging from 6. 7%~19. 0%. Correlation analysis indicated that there were a significant positive correlation between L and N1(node under breast -height),N2(node between breast –height and first branch) ,D1(diameter of culm at base part) ,D2(diameter of culm at breast-height),between each other of D1,D2,D3(diameter of 1/3 culm between breast –height and first branch),D4(diameter of 2/3 culm between breast –height and first branch),T1(thickness of culm wall at base part),T2(thickness of culm wall at breast-Height),T3(thickness of wall of 1/3 culm between breast –height and first branch) ,T4(thickness of wall of 2/3 culm between breast –height and first branch),but a significant negative correlation between N1 and L1(average length of internode under breast-height),L2(average length of internode between breast –height and first branch),L (average length of internode under first branch),There was a close relation between the morphological properties of Ph.edulis. Factor analysis indicated that the first three principal components accounted for 91.925% of the total variation , so can summarize most of the variation .The variation mainly came from D2,D3,D4,T1,T2,T3,T4,T5(thickness of culm wall at First branch), etc. Euclidean distance and cluster analysis showed the light genetic distance among ph.edulis populations. The result indicated that the geographical distribution did not have the obvious influence on the genetic distance. 2.18 populations of Ph.edulis were analyzed by use of 14 RAPD primer that generated 129 reproducible and clear amplification products. 101 loci were polymorphic and accounted for 78.29%.The genetic distance and cluster analysis based on RAPD indicated that the genetic identity and genetic distance were obviously different, the result showed the significant correlation between geographical distribution and genetic distance. 3.through comprehensive evaluating genetic diversity in Ph.edulis populations at two different levels. It was found that different markers reflected different degree of genetic differentiation and diversity .Morphological characters showed less differentiation ,but RAPD marker showed greater diversity among populations Ph.edulis. But the two levels all reflected the similar pattern of genetic diversity .
