This paper aims to protect environment and develop bioenergy technology. In the experiment distillation method is adopted and distillations in the different temperature range are collected. By studying the chemical composition and the thermal kinetics characteristics of biomass tar and its distillations, related reference material can be offered to research the use of biomass in energy and chemical industry. With gas chromatographic and mass spectrum analysis technology the chemical components of the samples are determined by looking up data base of mass spectrum Thermal kinetics characteristics are studied with comprehensive thermal analytic apparatus. By studying TG curve, DTG curve and DTA curve recorded by the computer, nature of the evaporation and combustion of biomass tar and its distillations is analyzed and parameters of their thermal kinetics are computed. The research result is as follows:First, biomass tar is a kind of low-sulfur fuel which has high moisture content, high oxygen content, high volatility quantity, low ash quantity, medium heating value, and can catch fire at the certain temperature. But because of its high moisture content, high oxygen content and some impurity, biomass tar needs to be purified or modified before using it as bunker oil. The chemical composition analysis indicates its main component is phenol and aromatic hydrocarbon, which will have the important instruction significance to application of biomass tar in the chemical propellant and the chemical industry raw material.Second, the upper ones of distillations below 150℃ and distillation ranging from 150℃ to 210℃ contain many kinds of useful organic compounds. The contents and the economic values of some compounds are high, so the compounds are worth separating and purifying. The thermal kinetics characteristics indicate the nature of the distillations approaches that of the diesel oil and the distillations can be used as the substitutes for petroleum. Because the flash point and ignition point of the distillations are higher than that of the diesel oil, it is suitable to use the distillations for the diesel engine with the precombustion device.
