This paper concerned the materials from five natural stands of Betula platyphylla in northeast part of China, and the chemical compositions and pulp properties of the wood were mainly measued and studied. The difference and relationships of chemical compositions and pulp properties of the wood among and within populations were also discussed by means of variance and correlation analysis. The results showed as follows:1. The chemical compositions among the populations were different obviously, except 1%NaOH extraction, cellulose and pentosan content. And the variation coefficient in each population was quite high, which could provide the possibility for selection among and within populations for pulpwood of this species.2. A significant positive correlation between the content of ash and benzo-alcohol extraction of the wood existed among the populations. Besides, the cellulose and pentosan content were also great positively correlated each other in the wood.3. Some negative correlations could be seen between the content of ash, benzo-alcohol extraction and longitude, as well as between lignin and latitude, also some positive relations between the cellulose, pentosan content and latitude. That means the birch from high longitude and latitude areas will have lower content of the ash, extraction and lignin, higher conten of the cellulose and pentosan in the wood.4. The correlation analysis between the chemical compositions and wood properties among ±e populations showed that the ratio of fiber wall, the wall-Lumina and basic density (BD) were correlated positively with the content of ash and extraction, as well as annual ring width with the content of cellulose and pentosan, small tensile strength with cellulose and pentosan extremely. So we could possibly know the wood properties by analyzing the chemical compositions of the wood for this birch.5. There was significant difference in the pulp properties except tensile and folding index-which was possible for this species to make population selection according to the pulp properties of the wood.6. By examining the paper made from Betula platyphylla, it displayed a significant positive correlation between burst index and apparent desity as well as tensile index, also between burst index and folder endurance, and between apparent desity and folder endurance.
