Effects Of Different Stocks On The Development And The Fruit Quality Of Watermelon

The author studied the effect of four different kinds of stocks on the development and the fruit quality of watermelon to probe into the choice of stock for watermelon and guide the producing practice. The stocks are black-seed squash, loofah, stock Jingxin No.1(pumkin) and Yongshi(wild watermelon). The variety of scion is FengshouⅠ.The results are as following:1.Surviving rate of different grafted plants is various. As for the four grafts, surviving rate of plants grafted with Yongshi, stock Jingxin No.1, black-seed squash and loofah dropped in turn. Effect of grafts to rate of growing is different, too, with the plant height, scion height, stock height and the thickness of graft and stock showing. These indexes for grafted plants are all higher than those of control. Grafting would accelerate the stem widen and boost up the plant growth. Plants grafted with stock Jingxin No.1 is with more leaf and higher chlorophyll content than the control, which improves photosynthesis efficiency. And the chlorophyll content of plants grafted with stock Jingxin No.1 is 5.5% more.2.The root system of grafted plants is stronger, with better absorbing function and more superior vitality than self-rooted ones, which promote the over-ground growth. The root-system vitality of plants grafted with black-seed squash remarkably surpasses the other grafted combinations, which is 520.95μg·TTC/g·h, higher 270.27μg·TTC/g·h than that of the control. This inversely benefit the growth of branches and tendrils. So the grafted plants have more unisonous nexus between the over-ground part and the underground part of the watermelon plant.
