This study which was supported by the project from the National Natural Science Foundationof China and chaired by Professor Ni Shaoxiang--Research on the outbreak mechanism and theforecasting model from Oriental Migratory Locust based on remote sensing and GIS taken Huanghua area of Hebei province as the study area. Using the TM and M0D1S remotely sensed image data obtained in the period of the key development stage of oriental migratory locust, the temperature of the land surface of the study area was retrieved, and the features of land surface temperature of different locust habitat types was investigated based on the result of the classification of oriental migratory locust habitat in the study area. The main contents of this study are as follows:1. The land surface temperature of the study area was retrieved using the Landsat TM data;2. The land surface temperature of the study area was retrieved using the MODIS data;3. The remote sensing classification of the oriental migratory locust habitat was conducted based on the recognition of the main locust habitat types existed in the study area;4. The features of the land surface temperature as the main habitat factor of oriental migratory locust were analyzed. The results show that:1. Using the meteorological observation data and based on the human experience knowledge, the land surface temperature was retrieved from TM and MODIS data. It was found that the results of the retrieving are reasonable. In other words, the retrieving error is acceptable.2. In Huanghua city, bare land and clamp open land are mainly distributed in the western region, farmland and reed in the middle region, and salt field with water in the eastern region. In accordance with this tendency in the spatial distribution of ground features the surface temperature in Huanghua city has the following patterns: gradually reducing from the west to the east. In more detail, the northwestern region of the Huanghua city has the highest surface temperature; the surface temperature of inhabited places in the middle and southern regions is obviously higher than that of the surrounding regions; and the land surface temperature in the eastern region is lower than that of the other regions.3. The analysis on the comparison between the spatial distribution of land surface temperature in the study area and the result of remote sensing classification of oriental migratory locust habitat indicated that the main habitat types of oriental migratory locust are in the order from high to low in terms of the land surface temperature when the satellite passes through the study area: inhabited place, bare land, salinization land, clamps open land, farmland, reeds land, and salt field with water. Moreover, for a single type of locust habitat the surface temperature is lower in the area closer to water body than other areas.
