Abstract : Betula luminifera is a species with fast growth, good adaptability and wide use range timber, which distributed in subtropical zones, but the wild resources of Betula luminifera are in endangered state in recent years, so every province begins to plant it artificially. In order to advance the basic research of Betula luminifera, The forestry department of Fujian Province and scientific and technological drawing room of the province especially established the key approach element "The quick propagation technology and application to fast growth species — Betula alnoides and Betula luminifera ". This text , through the studing of progeny' variation of plus-trees and the characteristics of growth , offers the theoretical foundation for Betula luminifera" improvation and cultivation. The main results is summed up as follws:1.110 plus-trees were selected from natural distribution areas in Fujian province in 2003 and 2004. These plus-trees had good phenotype performance, especially on growth traits ,the average tree height, diameter breast-high and stem volume are 22.68m, 33.37cm and 1.054406m3. They also had good displays in stem straight, stem fatness and health condition.2. Six traits, including seed length, seed width, seed wing, seed length/seed width ,weight of per 1000 seeds and germinating rate were measured. The results were showed that there were significant differences among plus-trees on 6 traits, especially on germinating rate which ranged from 2% to 94%, and the variation coefficient was 71.93%. weight of per 1000 seeds, seed length, seed width, seed wing, seed length/seed width in average were 0.208g, 1.681mm,l.308mm, 1.469mm, 1.299. Based on the correlative analysis, most of correlations between seed traits were very significant different among superior trees, but weight of per 1000 seeds and germinating rate had less correlation with other straits . The correlation coefficients between germinating rate were very high. 3.The progeny testing at seedling stage on 27 superior trees' families of Betula luminifera selected from Fujian province was carried out on State-owned Forest Farm of Yong an. With statistical methods, such as variation and correlation analysis, the genetic variation of Betula luminifera were studied, based on the investigation of 1-year-old seedling traits from different families. The results were showed that there were abundant variations within the Betula luminifera and very significant differences among families on seedling height and basal diameter. According to seedling height, 8 excellent families were preliminary selected from 27 tested families. The average genetic gain for 8 excellent families' seedling height and basal dimeter were 15.84% and 3.98% respectively. The average of 8 excellent families, seedling height and basal dimeter were 60.25cm and 4.03cm.4. There were significant differences among families in chlorophyll and carotenoid quantity of seedling, leaves. The positive correlation coefficient reached great significant level among chlorophyll and carotenoid quantity. There were middle positive correlativity among them and growth traits. High chlorophyll quantity and low chlorophyll a/b were important reference crierion of selection of fast growth families.5. Using the 27 superior trees, seedlings, progeny tests were built on State-owned Forest Farm of Weimin, Shaowu, Gutian and State-owned Forest Farm of Yong' an. Based on the investigation of 2-year-old progeny tests, there were very significant differences among families on tree height, tree basal diameter and crown which were mainly controlled by genetic factors. Through multisites variance analysis, the results showed that there were significant differences among sites, families and familiesxsites.
