Objective To study the incidence and clinical features of sarcoma patients and explore the role of cryosurgery with traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of sarcoma. Methods A retrospective study was conveyed. Data were collected from March 1st 2009 to March 1st 2015 in the oncology department of Dongfang Hospital. Patients with pathological diagnosis of sarcoma were selected. The general information, including name, medical record number, gender, age, etc. were recorded, as well as the information on diagnosis, history of diseases, types of treatments and outcomes. SPSS software was applied to analyze statistics. Results A total of 54 cases were collected, including 26 males and 28 females, which accounted for 1.41% of all malignant tumor patients admitted in the 6 years. Leiomyosarcoma is the most common sarcoma in this hospital, followed by fibrosarcoma and liposarcoma. The pathological types were significantly different with different genders. The most common primary location of occurrence was the inner organs, followed by the limbs. The clinical stage of most patients were stage III and IV. The most common sites of metastases were the lymph nodes, then the lungs, but lung metastases occurred more independently. As for the treatments, most patients underwent surgery, while only two cases received biological targeted therapy. Cryosurgical treatment with traditional Chinese medicine, which was our department’s special treatment, were accepted by most patients. The mean survival of patients used cryosurgery with TCM was 16.57 months. Typical case with stage IV osteosarcoma received cryosurgical treatments with TCM and has been living for 19 months, which indicates significant efficacy. Conclusion The present sarcoma treatment was mainly surgical, while advanced patients were more likely to seek comprehensive Chinese medicine treatments. The special treatment of our department attracted a number of advanced sarcoma patients. Although patients applied cryosurgery with TCM tended to survive longer than that used other treatments and the typical case showed promising effect, the efficacy of cryosurgery with TCM still needs further study to be confirmed.
