Purpose:We will research the effectiveness of electro-acupuncture on the acupoints Quchi, the channel-Hexue of the large intestine channel of hand yangming, and Shangjuxu, the organ lower-Hexue of the large intestine organ, on the treatment of functional constipation (FC). Treatment efficacy will be measured through clinical evidence, including the symptom of defecation, quality of life rating, negative affection, and comparison to Mosapride Citrate, a commonly used measure in Western Medicine. Pass this research, we will provide a scientific basis for using the channel-Hexue and organ-Hexue to treat organ-disease for promote acupuncture’s character.Methods:54patients entered into the study. They were randomly divided in treatment and control groups with individuals randomly added to supplement each group.49patients completed the study with27in the treatment and22in the control. The treatment group underwent electro-acupuncture at20Hz on the Shangjuxu and Quchi acupoints for30minutes,5times a week for weeks1-2and3times a week for weeks3-4, with a total of16electro-acupuncture treatments spanning4weeks. Along with electro-acupuncture, the treatment group took5mg Mosha Bili capsules orally30minutes prior to every meal for the entire four week testing period. Patient condition was measured before the treatment period, after2weeks, after4weeks, and one month after the completion of their treatment. Patients condition was rated with the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the MOS36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Statistical analysis was done on collected data.Results:1. There was a significant improvement (P<0.05) between the treatment group at2weeks,4weeks, and1month after treatment as compared to before treatment in the number of weekly bowel movements, stool shape, and degree of bowel movement difficulty. There was also a significant difference (P<0.05) between the treatment and control groups at each measure.2. There was a significant improvement (P<0.01) between the SAS, SDS, and SF-36results between the treatment group prior to the treatment and at2weeks,4weeks, and1month after treatment. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between the treatment and control groups.3. There was a significant different (P<0.05) between the treatment and control groups in the overall efficacy of the treatment. The effective rate of treatment and cure rate was markedly higher than the control group. There was no significant difference (P<0.05) between excess constipation and deficiency constipation in the treatment group. There was a significant difference (P>0.05) between the two types in the control group.Conclusion:1. Both electro-acupuncture on the Large Intestine Meridian and Large Intestine Xiahuwei and Mosha Bili capsules are effective treatments of FC. The efficacy of electro-acupuncture is most notable for increasing number of weekly bowel movements. Electro-acupuncture on the Large Intestine Meridian and Large Intestine Xiahuwei are more effective than Mosha Bili capsules in the short-and mid-term for decreasing the number of weekly bowel movements and reducing the bowel movement difficulty.2. Both electro-acupuncture on the Large Intestine Meridian Hexue and Large Intestine Xiahuwei and Mosha Bili capsules are effective in treating for patients’ anxiety and depression levels and increasing quality of life.3. The overall efficacy of electro-acupuncture on the Large Intestine Meridian Hexue and Large Intestine Xiahuwei on the treatment of FC is greater than Mosha Bili capsules. Electro-acupuncture is effective in the treatment in both excess constipation and deficiency constipation while Mosha Bili capsules are not effective in the treatment of deficiency constipation.
