The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), distributes in most of the tropical and temperate regions of the world and most provinces of China. Tribolium castaneum is an important storage pest and resource insect, as well as a significant model insect. In order to reduce the loss in agriculture production caused by Tribolium castaneum and further exploit and utilize it. Some morphological and biological indexes of Tribolium castaneum collected from 7 different geographical populations(including Shandong,Shanxi,Zhejiang,Hubei,Hunan,Fujian and Guangxi) had been compared. In addition, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique was used to analyze the the esterase isozyme diversity of 7 different geographical popolations. The main results are as follows:1 MorphologySome morphological indexes of each instar(egg, larvae, pupa and adult) of 7 different geographical populations were compared. The results showed that there were significant differences among each other in each index except for the egg.According to the research of the body length and body weight of the final instar larva, we found that the population from Shanxi predominated over other 6 ones in these two factors, which the body length is 6.26mm and the body weight is 3.72mg.Both the body length and body weight of Guangxi poplation are the minimum, only 5.44mm and2.40mg.It shows the similar trend on pupal length, pupal weight, adult length and adult weight, which is that it becomes smaller as the latitude decreases.2 BiologyParts of the biological characteristics of 7 different geographical populations were compared in this article. The results shows that all the indexes including generation effective cumulative temperature, development duration, heat tolerance, cold tolerance and hunger tolerance were significantly different among different geographical populations. We found that the generation effective cumulative temperature and development duration improved as the latitude increased. On the opposite side, heat tolerance and cold tolerance seem to be no connect with latitude. At the same time, there shows a marked relationship with the adult shape in the hunger tolerance study.3 Esterase IsozymePolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis technique was used to analyze the esterase isoenzyme of 7 different geographical populations of Tribolium castaneum. The result shows that there are not genetic diversity and geographical differentiation among those geographical populations.
