The key to turfgrass planting is water offering in arid area, and it consumes too much water in its planting. By cultivating Tall Fescue one of three mostly plantet grass in the north in PVC tube, we discussed effect brought to by applying three different kinds and different concentration Water-retaining Agent to turfgrass planting on growing, physiological characteristics, soil moisture and water-saving effect of Tall Fescue.the purpose of this paper is to provide scientific basis for applying of Water-retaining Agent in grass planting.The results obtained are as following:1. Water-keeping effect of soilThere is no striking effect brought about by three kinds of Water-retaining Agent on soil moisture with sufficient water supply, so the water-keeping effect is not evident; when water was supplied limitly, there is also no striking effect on shallow soil moisture, but is striking on shallow deep soil.2. Germination percentageBASF and AQUASORB brought no effect on germination time and germination percentage of tall fescue, Yanlu would reduce germination percentage, and Affect lessly germination time under sufficient water streament; all kinds of Water-retaining Agent didn't ruduce germination percentage and delayed germination time.3. Growing characteristicBesides Yanlv 570 g/m2 increased height-growth distinctly, other concentrations of BASF, AQUASORB and yanlv brought no effect on height-growing with enough water offored. Under limited water streament. BASF increased height-growing lightly, and AQUASORB reduced it lightly, but Yanlv increased it distinctly. BASF brought no effect on leaves biomass growth, but only AQUASORB 90 g/m2 reduced and Yanlv 870 g/m2 leaves biomass growth among all concentrations of AQUASORB and Yanlv when enough water offered. When limited water offered BASF increased biomass growth lightly, and AQUASORB reduced it lightly, but yanlv increased it distinctly.4. Density and value of root to crownAny kind and any concentrations of Water-retaining Agent that set for the test brought no effect on density of turfgrass no matter the water were offered sufficiently and limitly. Besides BASF 90 g/m2s'density had no diversity with CK, other concentrations of BASF, AQUASORB and yanlv had discrepancy on density with sufficient water offered.when weter was offered value of root to crown become smaller with concentrations of three Water-retaining Agent, but it had no obvious diversity with CK.5. Moisture conditionsThree kinds of Water-retaining Agent brought no effect on moisture content and water potential of turfgrass leaves with sufficient water offered. Different concentrations of BASF and AQUASOR had no diversity with CK on Moisture content of leaveas; the leaves'water potential of BASF 60 g/m2 and AQUASORB 60 g/m2 kept lower, but other concentrations treatment kept higher level of water potential, so they could enhanced drought resistance of turfgrass.6. Chlorophyll content of leavesBASF 60 g/m2 and QUASORB 90 g/m2 could obviously increased leaves chlorophyll content which were higher 15.31% and 15.71% than CK respectively, and leaves chlorophyll content under yanlv treatment were lower than CK under sufficient water treatments. When water was offered limitly three Water-retaining Agent raised.7. Photosynthetic characteristicsThere were no obvious diversity on Net photosynthesis, evapration, water efficiency and stoma conduct between no matter Water-retaining Agent were applied under sufficient water treatments. Under limited water treatments, Water-retaining Agent could heighten photosynthesis and water efficiency rate, and lowed evaporation and stoma conduct rate, so it was beneficial to enhanced photosynthesis rate, kept water losing and helped drought resisting.8. ResistanceUnder sufficient water treatments, BASF 30 g/m2 and AQUASORB 30 g/m2 could strengthened resistance, but took no effect on it. when water were offered limitly, three kinds of Water-retaining Agent could lowed penetrating of membrane compared with CK, while the effect AQUASOBR brought on was light, BASF and yanlu could markly strengthened resistance of turfgrass.9. Water-saving effectLower concentrations of BASF, AQUASOR and Yanlu reduced evaporation of turfgrass, while higher concentrations took no effect on evaporation under sufficient water treatments.while water were offered limitly,all concentrations of three kinds of Water-retaining Agent could reduced evaporation, especially BASF 60/m, AQUASORB 60 g/m2 and Yanlu 540 g/m2 could made striking effect, which saved water 0.5 mm/d,0.43 mm/d,0.20 mm/d respectively compared with evaporation under sufficient water treatments,and the water-saving rate was between 14.5%-17.1%. So we could irrigate turfgrass when drought emerges in the planting and maintaining of turfgrass.
