Understory shrubs and herbs is an important component of the forest ecosystem, plays an important role in maintaining the forest of nutrient cycling. Also, since it can reduce the erosion of forest land by surface runoff, understory shrubs and herbs is related to the function of the water and soil conservation. Therefore, it is significant to research on species diversity, composition characteristics and biomass of the understory shrubs and herbs. This paper is involved in approaches to estimate understory biomass of shrubs and herbs in ChangBai mountain region, plots was established in different density stands which are in natural spruce-fir forests and near-pristine forest. The understory biomass was adopted to the data by sample-plot survey, harvested a certain number of shrubs and dried them to measure its weight, then the biomass of models was got. Herbs biomass was used the method of harvesting all quadrat. The main research results are shown as follows.(1) The proportional distribution of organ of shrub is that trunk is the largest in all of organ of shrub, that is trunk> root>branch> leaf. The biomass of leaves in Radix Acanthopanacis Senticos is more than that of branching, which is caused by its morphology.(2) 10 species are used in this paper.Regardless of tree species, understory shrubs and herbs shrub biomass model was established. It is a power function, variables factors of the ground biomass model are CH (crown f* tree height), D H is variables of the underground biomass model.(3) If models was used for different species, linear function is better for Philadelphus,incanus and Koehne, the rest of models which are the form of the power function. The power function is a useful tool for estimating the understory shrubs and herbs biomass.(4) Through calculation and analysis of understory shrubs and herbs biomass, it has been found that:in a same forest type level, the understory shrubs and herbs biomass of the natural spruce-fir forest is more than that of near pristine forest. The shrub biomass for natural spruce-fir forest biomass is less than that of near-pristine forest with same density and different forest types, there is contrary to phenomenon for herb layer.
