According to afforestation conditions and long-term development requirement of ecological port in Tianjin Port, the study on selection and application of landscaping plants adapting to grow here has been researched for more than two years and achieved some significant fruits. Diverse methods and approaches had been adopted in this research, such as looking for plentiful references, investigating on the spot, experimenting in small scale, analyzing data and applying into engineering etc.At first, through investigations in the port region and surrounding, ecological pictures of wild plants were obtained more than 400 sheets, plant specimens were made including 48 family, 123 genus, 141 species. And the herbarium of Tianjin Port plants was established. At the same time, 114 kinds of landscaping plants were gained including 43 arbors (9 evergreen trees and 34 deciduous trees), 37 shrubs, 8 lianes and 26 been and perennial plants. Then 72 landscaping plants had been selected to be able to grow here by comparing these plants'growth. Moreover, 71 wild plants belonging to 24 family selected by investigating on the spot had been mainly reaseached. According to observation on experiment in small scale to the selected plants, ten elvaluation indexs were put forward and the Tianjin Port evaluation index system of landscaping plants was established successfully. This system was used to select appropriate landscaping plant species in Tianjin Port by evaluation, comparison and summarization. And 42 species of plants were gained including 4 shrubs, 13 biennial herbs, 13 perennial herbs, 7 climbing plants and 6 aquatic plants in which 15 species had been put into practice. Furthermore, through analysis and experiments to natural soil on which the salt-tolerant plants are able to grow, it showed that salt-tolerant plants had strong positive effects on the improved littoral saline-alkali soil. It can decrease the bulk density of the soil, strengthen the ventilation and permeable performances, greatly reduce the salt content on the top of soils and increase the amount of edaphon. Finally, these selected plants were used into the four landscaping projects. The result showed that they grew excellently with very strong adaptability and presented the better landscaping effection.Through this research, 112 kinds of landscaping plants were picked out firstly which can adapt to grow in littoral saline-alkali soil,includeing 42 wild plants and 72 landscaping plants which have been applied widely. And the kinds and planting methods of landscaping and wild plants in Tianjin Port have been acquainted basically. Through the engineering application, the result showed these plants seclected gained great economic, environmental and social benefits. It also provided the quite valuable reference for afforestation projects of Tianjin Port and Tianjin Binhai economic and developing area.
